Juneteenth

June 19, 2023

Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorated on June 19th every year in the United States to celebrate the emancipation of slaves. The holiday has its origins in Galveston, Texas, where Union soldiers arrived to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Juneteenth offers an opportunity to reflect on the progress made since the abolition of slavery and the work that still needs to be done to achieve racial equity and justice. It’s a time to celebrate Black culture, achievements, and the resilience of the Black community, while also acknowledging the ongoing struggle against systemic racism.

In recent years, there has been a push to make Juneteenth a national holiday. While it’s celebrated in many communities across the country, recognition on a national scale would serve as a reminder of the history of oppression in America and the ongoing efforts to dismantle the racial inequalities that still exist.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us continue to work towards a more just society for all.
